Sebastien De La Cruz also known as the Golden Mariachi (El Charro de Oro) stunned the whole stadium after singing the national anthem of the United States last Tuesday in Game 4 of the NBA finals. The young 11-year old mariachi singer proved to the world that even at a young age, anyone can become an inspiration and even a little person can make a difference.

Sebastien was very happy when he got invited once more to sing the same song during Game 4 of the NBA finals. According to the young singer, he was glad to be invited back by the Spurs team. Sebastien added that being part of the said event makes him feel he is doing something important.

This was not the first time Sebastien sang the national anthem in front of a huge crowd. In Game 3 of the NBA finals, this young talented boy performed the same anthem and gathered diffeent opinions about his performance. A lot of people were very pleased with regard to how Sebastien whole-heartedly sang the National Anthem.

But some people could not refrain themselves from criticizing the boy’s performance. According to a newspaper in Georgia, Andre Lacey, a firefighter will reportedly be disciplined and counseled after posting harsh comments about Sebastien’s performance. Fire Chief Chris James commented that Lacey’s actions were inappropriate and unacceptable. James also added that Lacey’s misguided actions do not reflect the entirety of the Fire Station.

Nevertheless, for many, including Julian Castro, Mayor of San Antonio and the one who endorsed Sebastian to sing the national anthem, he is both proud of Sebastien and amazed with his talent.

Sebastien’s roots

America’s Got Talent was the first reality talent show Sebastien appeared in. He was only 10 years old when he joined AGT and he went quite far in the competition. After being eliminated in the quarterfinals of AGT’s Season 7, he was called back as a wild card and reached the semi-finals. With his appearances in the reality show, he became an instant celebrity. In his community, Sebastian was often invited to sing on important events.

Support for El Charro

Just recently, Sebastien became the subject of tweets and commentary directed to his singing of the national anthem while wearing a mariachi outfit. Some comments were harsh and rather unfit for a boy that young. But the untoward remarks caused an outpouring of support from celebrities who took the time to express their admiration for the boy.

Texas born actress Eva Longoria said that she could relate to Sebastien because like him, she is also a Mexican-American. Eva extended her support for the boy and proudly noted that Sebastien is a great example of what America is all about. Singer Jordan Knight of the New Kids on the Block also took the time to tweet in the middle of an ongoing tour to express his support for Sebastien. Knight explicitly wrote that it is not right to give harsh comments to the kid for wearing a mariachi outfit while singing the national anthem. Any person can express his love for his heritage and at the same time his country, he tweeted.
