Pew Survey Lists Countries that are Most and Least Gay-Friendly

The Pew Research Center asked the question “Should society accept homosexuality?” in 39 countries around the world. The survey had 37,653 participants who were asked to pick one answer from two choices, namely “Yes” and “No.” The person asked could also decline to answer. The findings were compiled in a report that presents a list of 20 nations – the 10 most and 10 least homosexual-friendly countries in the world. The United States is somewhere in the middle of the list with 60% of the responders saying “Yes” and 33% saying “No.”

The survey did not include all the countries and may have left out some of the least or most gay-friendly countries. But a trend became evident when the results were analyzed. Evidently, LGBT people are more openly accepted in affluent and secular nations.

Top ten most gay-friendly nations

The ten most accepting countries, with the percentage of “Yes” responses in parenthesis are the following: Spain (88%), Germany (87%), Canada (80%), the Czech Republic (80%), Australia (79%), France (77%), United Kingdom of Great Britain (76%), Argentina (74%), Italy (74%), and the Philippines (73%). Most of the countries are in Europe with the exception of Australia, Canada (North America), Argentina (South America), and the Philippines (Southeast Asia).

Top ten least gay-friendly nations

In the meantime, the list of least accepting nations, based on the percentage of “No” answers is led by Nigeria with 98% saying no to the question posed by Pew researchers. The rest of the list includes: Jordan (97%), Senegal (96%), Uganda (96%), Ghana (96%) Egypt (95%), Tunisia (94%), Indonesia (93%), Palestinian Territories (93%), and Kenya (90%).

Most of these countries are in Africa and all have a significant Muslim population. Islamic religious leaders have been known to be vocal of their disapproval of same-sex relationships and homosexuality in general in defense of values that they want to teach those who abide by the Muslim faith.
