Boston Police Announced Capture of Boston Marathon Bombing Suspect

Boston had been in an extremely anxious state for five long days since the senseless twin explosions near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on April 15. Since then a massive manhunt was enforced while citizens come to grips with the multitude of untoward events left by the bombing incident.

Early Friday, there was a massive gun shootout between two persons and members of the police force after a rookie police officer Sean Collier, who responded to a disturbance report at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was gunned down by an unknown person. The gun man later became the victim of gunshot wounds and the detonation of the explosive device strapped to his trunk. Late on Friday the Boston police reported that the second suspect, who turned out to be the brother of the man who died earlier had been captured. The two were later identified as the suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing.

Boston is celebrating the end of their city-wide ordeal and is giving thanks to the Boston police amid cheers and a spontaneous parade.

Car chase and manhunt

The ensuing car chase that followed the fatal shooting of the police officer was very tense and eventful. The suspect, which later turned out to be two young men, managed to hijack an SUV. During the chase police reported that the suspects were hurling explosives at them.

At the road block the police made on the highway, they suspects engaged them in a fire fight, throwing explosives and firing high-powered guns. Later one of the men in the car came out and run towards the police officers. He was finally brought down. Doctors announced that he died from gunshot wounds and from shrapnel embedded on his trunk, apparently from the explosive device that was detonated during the shootout or when he was run over by his brother in his haste to get away.

Second gunman

Police continued to give chase after the second gunman. Cornered in a backyard in Newtown, he hid in a boat and engaged in another bout of gunfire with the police.

His whereabouts was tipped to the police by a man who managed to go outside after the warning to stay indoors was lifted. He noticed blood on his boat in the backyard, removed the tarp that covers the boat and saw a bloodied young man. After a brief bout of gunfire, the police asked him to come out. He refused to do so. Instead of approaching the boat, the police used a robot to remove the tarp and thermal imaging from the police helicopter that hovered above.

Identities

The identities of these gunmen were now released by police. The man who died earlier was Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26 years old and the older brother of the man that was captured, 19-year old Dzhokar Tsarnaev. The brothers are of Chechen origin. Their family had immigrated to the United States some ten years ago. The younger brother, Dzhokar is a naturalized U.S. citizen, while his brother, Tamerlan, who came later, is already a green card holder. Their parents went back to Dagestan because they felt homesick.

Their sister, Ailina Tsarnaeva, who told U.S. federal agents that she hasn’t had any contact with her brothers for over two years, expressed her willingness to cooperate in the investigation. Earlier, police took away a computer and other electronic devices from her home.
