Hugo Chavez’s Health Remains Uncertain

After his operation in La Habana, Cuba, on 12/11/2012, the President of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, had not been seen in public again. Neither had any pictures of him been released until the Spanish newspaper El País released the 01/24/2013 issue with a picture of the President on its cover. The image was also published on El País’s webpage, though only for a few minutes, as they had to remove it after a few hours, when the legitimacy of the photograph was questioned. El País finally recognized that the picture was not genuine and the public went back to wondering about the health of Hugo Chavez.

It was not long, though, before the Ministry of Information and Communication of Venezuela published a picture of the President themselves where he could be seen reading the newspaper of the day with his two daughters. The image was released this Friday and there are already further questions on the part of the opposition about the veracity of the official picture: many argue that the appearance Chavez has in the picture is not in keeping with an image of a person who has undergone four operations and suffered a severe pulmonary infection.

The information offered by the government about Hugo Chavez’s health states that the President is still hospitalized and breathing through a cannula, but that the pulmonary infection is already under control.

The concern for Hugo Chavez grows every day that goes by without any precise pieces of information. However, a large part of Venezuela’s population has faith in his prompt recovery, while the rest is already speculating who will succeed him as the leader of the country.
