Iron Man, the comic book superhero is now dominating the big screen as its third sequel was released this year. The third installment to the Iron Man franchise earned over a billion dollars worldwide. Iron Man 3 easily overtook Transformers: Dark of the Moon and claimed the fifth spot in the all time box office movie hit list.

Robert Downey Jr. has portrayed the billionaire superhero for the fourth time, including Iron Man’s key appearance in the movie, The Avengers. Though it was a collaboration of Marvel superheroes fighting the same villain, Iron Man took the spotlight, predictably so and saved New York from an alien invasion at the end of the film. And there just might be another movie at the works, at least that’s what fans like to believe. Iron Man fans say that they want Downey Jr. for another Iron Man movie. They just could not get enough of the billionaire, genius, playboy and philanthropist superhero.

Top 5 all time box office movies

There are several Hollywood movies released every year. All these movies are ranked based on gross sales domestically and worldwide. Leading the bunch of all time top-grossing Hollywood movies are Avatar and Titanic. Avatar was launched in 2009 and was praised for its revolutionary stunning visual effects. In 1997 Titanic hit the big screen and put everyone in awe with the perfect mix of love story and tragedy. The film won a number of Academy Awards and was ranked the top-grossing movies of all-time for many years.

Avatar eventually pushed Titanic from the top spot with the relevant storytelling mixing very well with state-of-the-art use of computer generated graphics. The movie was able to win Best Picture and Best Director awards in the same year. Ranking third is The Avengers while the final installment of the Harry Potter movie series ranked fourth. Transformers: Dark of the Moon is now at sixth place, with the 5th spot recently secured by Iron Man 3.

The ranking was determined based on the gross worldwide sales.

Iron Man leads the crime fighting bunch

Comic books are still being widely read, but avid readers are now patiently and eagerly awaiting their favorite comic book superheroes’ next appearance in film. In the past few years, Marvel and DC superheroes have started to take new life in movie screens. Their adventure and crime fighting scenes are definitely more vivid as visual effects and 3D viewing has made movies more realistic.

Among the list of comic book heroes that have made it to the big screen are The Hulk, Thor, Captain America and Green Lantern. However, movie experts have since concluded that Iron Man, Batman and Superman are the ones leading the bunch.

According to Box Office Mojo, Christian Bale’s portrayal of Batman was shadowed by Robert Downey Jr.’s performance in Iron Man 3. Figures showed that viewers eventually prefer a billionaire who flies over a brooding dark knight. The Dark Knight Rises was able to earn $1.08 billion after 147 days while Iron Man 3 broke the record in just 22 days.

Will the Man of Steel stop Iron Man’s winning streak?

Coming this June is the return of the Man of Steel. A lot of movie enthusiasts are wondering if Henry Cavill, the actor who is going to play Superman, can top Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man. The outcome remains to be seen.
