Nelson Mandela Receives Lifetime Award for Global Peace from Malaysia

There is no one idolized and respected in the whole world for his courage and leadership as much as South Africa’s former president, Nelson Mandela. For his many contributions to his country’s welfare and human civilization as a whole, he was given the first Lifetime Award for Global Peace by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, YabDato’ Sri NajibTunRazak through the Mahathir Global Peace Foundation on Monday.

On behalf of Mandela

The award was received by President Jacob Zuma of South Africa on behalf of the 95 year-old anti-apartheid icon. Pres. Zuma said that even as the award is presented to Nelson Mandela, he and the whole South African nation are happy and humbled to share in the greatness of their beloved former president. President Zuma added that he and his countrymen felt proud and fortunate to have a kinship with a person recognized as an international icon through his dedicated efforts for liberation and peace.

The acceptance speech greatly showcased the works of Mandela as well as his contributions not only to his native country but to the whole world. President Zuma also said that the global peace award from Malaysia also signifies an opportunity for the world to echo the memorable role Mandela played in the liberation of his countrymen.

No stranger to Malaysia

The honor bestowed on South Africa’s Mandela by another country reiterates the fact that his work is appreciated and recognized by many outside of his beloved country. Mandela is no stranger to Malaysia since he is a good friend of former Prime Minister Mahathir bin Mohamad. The two have been very close as they worked together in strengthening the ties between South Africa and Malaysia in the past.

Making a mark in history

Nelson Mandela is known to his countrymen as “Madiba.” Madiba simply refers to the Xhosa tribe were Mandela belongs. South Africans consider it a huge honor to be named after their tribe of origin.

Mandela has left an indelible mark in history. His many struggles made him one of the most prominent figures in world politics, though he did not aspire for it. His conviction and determination served as his arsenal through his continued fight for equality, even after apartheid was ended in his country. Mandela became an international icon not because of his rank as president of South Africa but as a man who fought against war, poverty, injustice, racism and degradation.

Madiba’s health

Nelson Mandela has been in hospital for the last two and a half months. He was rushed on June 8 to the Pretoria Mediclinic Heart Hospital after suffering from a recurring lung infection. He was admitted and his doctors announced that he was in a serious condition. Prayers poured out from around the world as doctors worked hard to improve Madiba’s health.

Despite his frail health, Mandela has showed signs of resilience and stability. His positive health status was recently confirmed by the Office of the President of South Africa. This encouraging news has boosted the hope of many of his supporters and admirers. Mandela’s current “critical but stable” condition was also confirmed by his family members.
