On March 14 in New York City, the world is set to be introduced to what is to be the first eye-controlled smartphone in the world. This newest addition to an already impressive lineup of smartphones is courtesy of Samsung. The excitement over the Android-based Galaxy S IV mobile technology is being fueled by speculation on its eye scrolling feature, a revolutionary new technology that the previous phones in the Galaxy series do not have.

Samsung’s current bestseller the Galaxy S III has a feature called “Smart Stay” which allows for automatic screen lighting when a person is looking at the phone’s screen. This is done via the frontal camera installed in the smartphone. But this is the only eye tracking system in place in Samsung devices so far. And now, the rumor is flying around that the next level of eye tracking technology is already here.

Control only with your eyes

So, what exactly is “eye scrolling?” This is how it works, according to an anonymous employee of the South Korean telecommunications giant who shared the information with some trepidation. The Galaxy S IV is equipped with the technology that uses the eyes of the mobile phone user to figure out where to scroll on the screen. And so, when you read a page of text on your Galaxy S IV and your eyes happen to reach the bottom of the page, the phone will scroll down automatically so that you can continue reading. And there’s no need to touch or click on the phone surface to get to the next pages of text.

What’s in a name?

So far, the name for this amazing technology has not yet been revealed, but Samsung has already initiated the legal procedures in Europe and the United States for exclusive rights to the “Eye Scroll” trademark. It has been formally described as computer software that has the capability of detecting movements of the eyes and scrolling displays of various models of smartphones and tablets, and even digital cameras.

Other great new features

In addition, the new Galaxy S IV soon to be revealed a few days from now will feature various additional improvements particularly in the software installed within it. The employee who spilled the beans even said that this latest version would be more inclined to featuring new software rather than hardware, but before we believe that, there’s a statement on the contrary released by Samsung itself.

The Chief Product Officer of Samsung, Kevin Packingham has not yet revealed any details on the features of the Galaxy S IV, thus increasing the anticipation for what great new features are in store for consumers. Puckingham only clarified that the software features will not in any way upstage the hardware features of the latest product in the Galaxy series. With this statement in mind, consumers are at least assured that the Galaxy S IV will be worth its hefty price tag in more ways than one. In a few days’ time all will be revealed.
