Top Voice Actors: The Men and Women Behind the Popular Animation Characters in the 1990s

Most of the animation projects for film, television and video games in the 1990s were voiced by a select group of highly talented and skilled voice actors of both genders. However, their gender does not limit them to give life to either a female or a male character. Here are some of them.

Voice Actors

Jim Cummings. He is the voice behind so many characters. In the 1990s he had lent his versatile voice to Don Karnage (Tailspin), Mega Brain (Widget the World Watcher), Bonkers (Raw Toonage) and Pete (Goof Troop). He was also Ioz (Pirates of Dark Water), Darkwing Duck and Adams Family’s Lurch. He is Morocco Mole (Two Stupid Dogs), Dakota Duke (Wild West C.O.W. boys of Moo Mesa), Swat Kats’ Mayor Manx, Dr. Robotnik (Sonic the Hedgehog) and Taz in Taz-Mania. In Captain Planet he was Sly Sludge, Razoul (Alladin), Savage Dragon, Kaa (Jungle Cubs), Cat (CatDog), the hyena named Ed in Lion King and the Colonel in 101 Dalmatians. In Iron Man he was M.O.D.O.K.

His other works include Powerpuff  Girls’ Fuzzy Lumpkins, Legend of Tarzan’s Tantor, Jonah Hex, Super Hero Squad’s Thanos and Ray in Princess and the Frog. His most significant work is being the voice of Winnie the Pooh.

Rob Paulsen. He has 30 years of experience as a voice actor, breathing life to a variety of characters, including being the voice of Raphael in the original series of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. He comes back to the series in 2012 as the voice of Donatello. His outstanding works in the 1990s include Antoine D’Coolette (Sonic the Hedgehog), Arthur (The Tick), title characters in The Mask and Mighty Max, Dr. Otto Scratchansniff and Yakko Warner (Animaniacs), and Pinky (Pinky and the Brain) where he won several awards. In Tiny Toon Adventures he was the voice of Concord Condor, Arnold the Pit Bull and Fowlmouth.

Voice Actresses

Tress MacNeille. She started in 1979 and has a long list of works to her name. She voiced several characters in The Simpsons, Futurama, in Warner and Disney projects, video games and more. In the 1990s some of her characters include Merla and Haggar in Voltron, Chip, Zipper and Gadget in Rescue Rangers, Martha Kent in Superman, Shenzi the hyena in Timon and Pumbaa, Lady Bane in Gummi Bears, Babs Bunny in Tiny Toon Adventures, Daisy Duck, Charlotte Pickles in Rugrats and Dot Warner in Animaniacs.

Kath Soucie. She also started in 1979. Her list of voice character works is quite long, including numerous films, made for TV films, direct to video works, TV animations, and video games. Her major roles in the 1990s include Little Sneezer and Fifi Le Fume in Tiny Toon Adventures, Nicole and Princess Sally Acorn in Sonic the Hedgehog, Secret Squirrel and Cindy Bear in Yo Yogi!, and Tara Boumdeay in Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. In the Widget World Watcher, she was Kristine and Brian, Bea in Mighty Max, Linka in Captain Planet and was Princess Katherine in Gargoyles. She was Bubbles (Powerpuff Girls), Winifred (Jungle Cubs), Daisy Duck (Quack Packs), Li’l Devil and Phil (Rugrats) as well as Rolly and Anita Dearly (101 Dalmatians).
