Superman and Batman Join Forces

Who says Superman and Batman can’t work together? DC Entertainment has announced that it will unveil a new comic book franchise featuring the two most popular superheroes of all time.

Batman/Super will debut to fans in the summer. The thrust of the comic is how the two first met and how they began their careers as superheroes in The DC Comics-The New 52 universe, a relaunched and repackaged version of the universe of the superheroes. The comic to hit stores in June will be written by Greg Pak, supported with illustrations by Jae Lee. This is the first time Pak and Lee will work directly together on a project.

Crazy and tons of fun

The comic book writer, Greg Pak revealed that “It’ll be big and crazy and tons of fun.” He is thrilled to be writing this new plotline since he was given a lot of leeway in terms of storytelling. This is the first time that Pak will be penning a story for DC Comics. The chance to write a story featuring Batman and Superman in one story was simply too good to pass up.

What’s new?

The series will begin at the start. Bruce Wayne is just starting out as Batman and Clark Kent is just becoming known as the hero Superman. According to Pak, the setting will be when “neither one of them has ever heard of the other guy.”

Readers will be able to get a glimpse of the initial first impressions each character has of the other when they encounter each other for the very first time, something that has not been thoroughly explored in other comics.

Teasers also include a “threat” that will affect both heroes, which will be revealed later on.

Prior collaborations

This isn’t the first time that the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight will come together.

In 1985, comic book readers got to see Batman and Superman as best friends, in the series Crisis on infinite Earths. However, it was in the comic book series The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller that readers got to see their favorite super heroes at odds with each other.

In the summer of 2003, DC Comics launched the monthly comic book series. It was a new take on its predecessor, World’s Finest Comics. The 2003 comic book series also called Superman/Batman focused on the tense relationship yet deep friendship between the two heroes. The first 25 books were written by Jeph Loeb. The entire series was published from October 2003 to August 2011. Superman/Batman had a total of 87 issues plus five annuals.

Sales of the maiden issue of Superman/Batman placed it as the third best selling comic book in August 2003. The 11th series of Superman/Batman became the best selling comic in July 2004.

Since the 1930s, both Batman and Superman characters have been part of DC’s world. DC Comics is under the Time Warner Inc. group of companies.
